Access Unlocked For PayPal After Registration In Accordance With Indonesian Licensing Rules

US payment firm PayPal is registered as an electronic systems operator in Indonesia and its customers can now access its services, the company said.

PayPal was one of several websites that Indonesia blocked over the weekend due to their failure to comply with new licensing rules.

Companies have been given a deadline to register in July under new rules that would allow authorities to force platforms to disclose certain users’ data and remove content deemed illegal or “disturbing public order” within four hours if urgent, and 24 hours, if not.

Johnny G. Plate, Indonesia’s Minister of Communications, urged people to avoid using unregistered services “to minimize the loss that may be incurred if illegal activities are committed in these private services.”

The Ministry of Communications said it had also unblocked access to the services of the Yahoo search engine and the video game company Valve Corporation, after he said he blocked them on Saturday.

The new licensing rules have sparked controversy as activists and the public fear the government could control social media content.
