Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Hideaki Nishino hinted at a portable PlayStation and discussed the future of the company’s consoles. He spoke about this in an interview with Famitsu in honor of the publication’s 40th anniversary.
During an interview with Famitsu to celebrate the magazine’s 40th anniversary, Nishino briefly touched on the topic of Sony’s future consoles. Referring to Nishino’s 2024 statement that hardware products wouldn’t disappear anytime soon, journalists asked whether Sony would continue to focus on creating gaming consoles. The head of SIE answered affirmatively. “My belief that a console is essential for gaming hasn’t changed,” Nishino said, adding that Sony “intends to continue producing its own gaming consoles.”
PlayStation Portal support begins in November 2025, and Nishino called cloud streaming an important feature for the portable console. He added that “gamers are comfortable using cloud streaming, and their numbers are growing at a good pace.” According to his data, in January 2026, there were 1.5 times more users of this feature than in December 2025.
Nishino said that with PlayStation Portal, the company accepted the challenge of developing a device that would offer a new type of gaming experience. “We thought, ‘Let’s try this, let’s try that,’ and I’d like to see us continue to move forward in product development, exploring different ideas in this way,” Nishino said. The SIE CEO remained confident that gaming will remain one of the “main sources of entertainment” for people in the future, but that people’s lifestyles are gradually changing, and hardware developers must take this into account.
The head of Sony Interactive Entertainment also emphasized that the company will continue to experiment with new hardware solutions. He believes that changing user habits require the exploration of new gaming device formats, and video games will remain a key form of entertainment.
