Wikipedia Was Unblocked In Pakistan
It was learned that the Prime Minister had signed a document to unblock Wikipedia, which stated that “the undesirable consequences of this comprehensive ban outweigh its benefits.” The official also instructed the cabinet to “explore alternative technical solutions and make recommendations to remove or block access to inappropriate content hosted on Wikipedia and other websites.” The Cabinet of Ministers must provide a document with recommendations within one week.
The site was blocked on February 4 due to “blasphemous” content. The Pakistani authorities demanded that Wikipedia remove the mentioned content, but the site did not comply with this requirement, after which it was blocked.
Laws in Pakistan allow the death penalty for anyone convicted of insulting Islam. From 2012 to 2016, YouTube was blocked in Pakistan after a film about the Prophet Muhammad was uploaded to it, sparking protests.
