Volvo Reveals Its First Driverless Truck
Car manufacturer Volvo has unveiled its first self-driving truck. It was created together with Aurora Innovation, which created autonomous vehicle technology. The new product was presented at the ACT Expo in Las Vegas
The vehicle is built on the basis of the Volvo VNL model, intended for long-distance transportation. Its unmanned version is equipped with many cameras and sensors, the data from which is processed by the Aurora system with the ability to autonomously control the fourth level – it allows you to do without a person at the wheel. The vehicle was “specifically designed and built” for the Aurora autopilot system. Launching the model into mass production will help companies recoup the funds they invested in the development of unmanned vehicles. The new generation of tractor units will be produced at the Volvo plant in Dublin (USA, Virginia) – this is the company’s largest enterprise in the world.
Aurora was founded in 2017. Its creators were people from Google, Uber and Tesla. The startup has been collaborating with Volvo since 2018. The new unmanned truck became one of the first joint products.
