UK To Spend £100m On “Sovereign” AI

The British government has announced a significant investment of £100 million in a working group dedicated to developing basic artificial intelligence models. The strategic investment in the country’s AI capabilities is to ensure that the UK remains globally competitive in this critical technology. The AI Development Group will report directly to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Science and Technology, with a chair appointed this summer. The announced funding comes alongside £900m of UK funding for a supercomputer, AI research and more.

British authorities expect this project to create a “sovereign AI algorithm” that will help boost the country’s economy while avoiding ethical and technological issues. Currently existing AI algorithms do not always provide reliable information and may behave unpredictably.  The British authorities want to create a trustworthy algorithm that can be useful in various areas, including the development of new medicines, the fight against climate change, and others.
