OpenAI To Provide Free Access To GPT-5.6 To 100,000 Scientists

OpenAl announced the launch of the ChatGPT for Academic Researchers program, which provides free access to proprietary AI models for members of the academic community. The initiative is designed for scientists, mathematicians, and engineers from selected universities and research institutions.
Researchers from select academic institutions included in the program will receive practical support from OpenAI, access to the latest GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model, and the opportunity to recruit up to four colleagues from their institution. The program will launch by the end of summer with 10,000 participants and grow to 100,000 by 2027. The company is providing free access to AI as part of a “commitment of over $250 million by 2027 to support third-party scientific research and discovery.” Scientists are already using AI models for data analysis and grant writing—now this relationship will be formalized.
According to one theory, OpenAI is seeking new data sources for its research, although it states that by default this information will not be used for these purposes. Free access to AI for scientists could lead to scientific breakthroughs, and if new fields of knowledge begin to rely on AI, this will ultimately contribute to commercial success.
The company previously introduced the Prism service for working with scientific publications, which helps check citations, format research, and perform other tasks.
