OpenAI Released GPT-6 Sol And Luna

OpenAI has expanded the GPT-6 family with two models: GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. They complement the flagship GPT-6 Astra and are designed for tasks where cost, speed, and the ability to scale high volumes of requests are more important than maximizing the model’s capabilities.
The key change is the API pricing. According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Sol and Luna cost half as much as the promotional rates for the corresponding GPT-5.6 models.
The initial versions of the Sol and Luna models were unveiled earlier this year, occupying distinct niches within OpenAI’s model hierarchy. Sol is designed to handle complex tasks such as programming, whereas Luna—according to OpenAI—is better suited for routine office work, specifically “high-volume tasks with clearly defined goals, such as summarizing documents, extracting information, or answering simple questions.”
OpenAI is focusing on significantly enhancing the efficiency and accessibility of the updated Sol and Luna models—primarily by substantially lowering API access costs. The new versions of Sol and Luna will cost half as much as their predecessors (based on GPT-5.6). The company attributes this price reduction to optimizations in caching and inference processes.
When releasing new models, OpenAI typically claims that its latest offerings outperform those of its main competitor, Anthropic. This launch was no exception; the company repeatedly emphasizes in its press release that the GPT-6 Sol and Luna models handle tasks significantly better than Anthropic’s flagship models, such as Fable and Opus.
GPT-6 Sol costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. For GPT-6 Luna, the rate is $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens. This is roughly half the promotional price of GPT-5.6 Sol and Luna.
For comparison, the current promotional rates for GPT-5.6 are $4/$20 per million tokens for Sol and $0.20/$1.20 for Luna. It is reported that the promotional prices for GPT-5.6 Sol will remain in effect for another two months.
