OpenAI Introduces Dots – AI Agents With Their Own Computers

OpenAI has unveiled Dots—personal AI agents capable of performing tasks around the clock. They run on GPT-6 Astra, feature their own cloud-based computing and browser capabilities, and connect to over 4,000 applications via plugins.

The key difference between Dots and standard ChatGPT is that the agent is provided with its own computing environment. Each Dot runs on a dedicated cloud-based computer, complete with its own browser and account for managing access and permissions. Users can also access this virtual computer to see exactly what the Dot is doing.

By default, the cloud environment is isolated from the user’s computer; however, a Dot can be connected to the user’s machine if needed, allowing the agent to operate directly on the user’s device.

Dots is powered by the GPT-6 Astra model. OpenAI has also integrated these agents with its proprietary plugin ecosystem, enabling them to work with over 4,000 applications. Users can interact with a Dot via ChatGPT, text messages, Slack, and Microsoft Teams, as well as through voice communication, with context maintained across these different channels.

A key feature of Dots is the ability to independently continue work that has already begun. Users do not need to keep a chat window open or oversee every step; the agent can take on a project, execute specific stages, track changes, and reach out to the user only when a decision is required.

Dots also features a dedicated mechanism to guard against potentially dangerous behavior. If the agent detects a security threat, it can pause or completely halt the execution of a task. OpenAI explicitly notes that Dots can still make mistakes, so any output relied upon for important decisions or actions should be verified.

The rollout of Dots has begun for Pro and Business Premium subscribers in supported regions. For Enterprise, Education, and Healthcare plans, the beta version must be enabled by the workspace administrator.The company announced this during the DevDay 2026 recap.
