Netflix Officially Confirms Season 2 of ‘The Squid Game’ Is Coming
Netflix has officially confirmed what millions of viewers have long suspected: the squid game will return for a second season.
Series writer/director Hwang Dong Hyuk announced the news in a letter to fans on Sunday, noting that the South Korean show’s worldwide popularity has set the stage for a second season.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of the squid game to life last year. But it took 12 days. squid game to become the highest rated Netflix series ever,” Hwang wrote, teasing the next season a little, “And now Ki Hoon is back. The frontman is back. Season 2 is coming. He added, “Join us one more time for a brand new round.” However, the streaming service hasn’t given a possible release date when the squid game could return.
Netflix’s content director and co-CEO Ted Sarandos previously stated that the squid game was “absolutely” returned for season 2 after the series quickly became the most watched Netflix series worldwide. “The squid game universe has just begun.”
Hwang added in an interview that he “was in talks with Netflix for both season two and season three. We will come to a conclusion as soon as possible.” However, the second season was not officially confirmed until Sunday’s announcement, with Hwang even making sure that the series could have ended with the last episode of the first season.
