Meta Can No Longer Fund Its US News Publishers

The tech giant Meta has begun informing its news partners that the company will stop paying publishers to post their content on the Facebook News tab in the US.

According to Axis, the fundamentals have become less of a priority as the company moves forward with a sweeping change to how it works with Facebook.

According to the report, Meta spent about $105 million on three-year news content deals (plus another $90 million on news videos), including $10 million on advertising. Wall Street Journal $20 million for them The New York Times $3 million for CNN in deals that sometimes included unlocked access to paywall content. The Wall Street Journal previously reported that tightening regulation to force Facebook and other internet giants to pay for news dampened the company’s enthusiasm, citing a source today who said the paid news hike was “an experiment that ultimately didn’t pay off.”
