Apple may unveil a smart home control center, tentatively dubbed HomePad by journalists, as early as October. The device will be part of an expanding smart home ecosystem and will feature its own operating system with deep Siri AI integration.
A key feature is the availability of two form factors. The desktop version is suitable for the kitchen or living room, while the wall-mounted version can be installed in the kitchen, hallway, or bedroom. This approach allows for multiple control points for smart devices throughout the home. Apple anticipates that users will purchase multiple hubs for comprehensive home automation control.
The device’s operating system is based on tvOS from Apple TV, but the interface is designed to be as easy to use as possible. It combines elements from tvOS (menus and navigation), watchOS (quick actions and notifications), and iOS (full-fledged apps). The screen displays familiar app icons, weather widgets, calendar widgets, and smart home controls.
A key feature is built-in facial recognition. When family members approach the hub, the system automatically identifies them and displays a personalized interface. Everyone sees their calendar, reminders, contacts, and favorite apps without having to enter a password. Furthermore, when the user is close to the screen, interface elements expand for convenience, and when farther away, they shrink, saving space.
The device will serve as a central control panel for all HomeKit accessories (smart lights, electric locks, climate control systems). The hub will allow users to monitor security cameras, receive motion alerts, and view live camera feeds. FaceTime video calls can be made directly on the large screen. Families can also benefit from two-way intercom, a system that allows for communication between rooms without smartphones.
The company plans to introduce a device with a robotic arm and a built-in screen in the future. Gurman notes that the announcement date may change, though he expects the hub to be unveiled between October and early next year.
