Developer Linden Labs has announced that it is developing a mobile version of the game, which is expected to launch later this year.
The original Second Life game, which is still playable today, is for PC. It’s also been around for 20 years, making the mobile version kind of a surprise announcement.
According to the Ars Technica report, the mobile app is being built using Unity, which will make it easy to distribute the game on iOS and Android devices. The company also released a YouTube video showing some footage of the characters and environments, as well as Linden Labs trying to make it look like a board game as much as possible.
Second Life was quite hyped in its early years on the market, but over the past 15 years its existence has dwindled quite a bit. The idea behind the mobile version of the service, as well as the interest in the so-called “metaverse”, seems to be to breathe new life into the service.
The developers note that it is still under development. Thus, players will not see much of the user interface or any functionality. But Linden Lab has made significant strides in what it considers the most important part of Second Life – avatars and the environment.
