Orion Showed The Earth And The Moon In One Photo From A Record Distance

The Orion spacecraft’s record distance from Earth apparently made for a stunning photo. NASA shared a photo taken by the Artemis I spacecraft on Monday showing the Earth and Moon in the background.

This historic event was captured by one of Orion’s on-board cameras, which sent back breathtaking photos and live video. The new footage was taken at the highest resolution.

Orion took the picture at its maximum distance from Earth at 268,563 miles. This is the longest distance traveled by any human-oriented spacecraft, breaking even the Apollo 13 record of 248,655 miles set in 1970.

Epic views are not only creative inspiration from the cosmos. Videos and photos created during the Artemis I mission aim to inform about upcoming trips to the Moon. NASA wants to make sure that the spacecraft is ready to safely deliver people to such far distances from Earth. If Artemis I succeeds, the next two missions will take place: Artemis II with a crew will fly around the Moon around 2024, and Artemis III will land people on its surface in 2025 or 2026.
