Brazil Fines Apple $19M For Missing iPhone Charger

The American corporation Apple in Brazil was fined for selling its smartphones in the city of São Paulo without chargers, as well as for products that did not meet the advertised specifications.

In court, Apple argued that the production of extra adapters is harmful to the environment. Fewer adapters means less carbon emissions. The judge did not agree with such arguments and believes that the company simply imposes the purchase of charging adapters that were previously included in the kit.

“It is clear that under the pretext of a “green initiative”, the defendant is imposing on the consumer the mandatory purchase of power adapters that were previously supplied with the product,” the court said in the decision.

Apple plans to appeal the court’s decision, but if the decision does not change, then it will have to sell the iPhone with the adapter included and provide it to all Brazilians who purchased the iPhone after October 13, 2020.
