Sony Unveils FX5: A Full-Frame Cinema Camera With 5K, AI And Next-Generation RAW

Sony unveiled the FX5, arguably the most important cinema camera in its lineup in a long time. It features a new sensor and processor, as well as a host of other features that meet user needs.
The camera retains the compact design of the FX3, but is slightly thicker due to the new sensor. The screen has grown to 3.5 inches with a 16:9 aspect ratio, is fully articulating, and is brighter than its predecessor. Full sensor readout allows for 5K 3:2 open-gate shooting at up to 60 or 120 fps, depending on the mode. This provides tremendous freedom in post-production: you can losslessly crop vertical video, recompose, or work with anamorphic lenses.
The FX5 offers 16 stops of dynamic range, internal RAW support (X-OCN LT, C1, C2), triple the native ISO, and improved five-axis stabilization. According to Sony, the new gyro-based system is twice as effective in rotation and approaches the quality of the Alpha 7R VI. There are Active and Dynamic Active modes, as well as professional monitoring tools: False Color, waveform, vectorscope, focus map, histogram, zebras and peaking.
The Sony FX5 will be available in mid-August this year for $4,898; a kit with an XLR grip will be available for $5,498—the grip itself can be purchased for $798; an optional electronic viewfinder is priced at $698; and a timecode adapter for synchronizing with other equipment is also available for $98.
