Google has expanded the Gemini AI’s functionality for navigation in Google Maps. In November 2025, Google approved the use of Gemini for driving navigation. Conversations with the Gemini chatbot in Google Maps are now available for walking and cycling.

The update focuses on hands-free navigation. For pedestrians, Google offers use cases that allow users to learn more about their surroundings, request a list of recommended attractions, or find cafes along their route. Cyclists have access to specific features. For example, they can check their calendar for their next appointment without interrupting their ride, and Android users have access to an exclusive voice messaging feature.

Gemini’s functionality also covers standard navigation and multimedia queries, which can consist of multiple steps. Users can use voice to request directions home, add a stop, disable voice prompts, or request alternative routes. The system can also answer questions about the next turn, estimated time of arrival, weather at the destination, and the next stop.

The update has already begun rolling out to users in the Google Maps mobile app on iOS and Android in regions where Gemini is available. To activate the feature, say “OK, Google” or tap the Gemini icon in navigation mode.
