PlayStation 5 Sales Exceed 50 Million Consoles
PlayStation 5 sales have exceeded 50 million consoles, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced. The system managed to reach the coveted milestone on December 9 – 161 weeks since its launch in 2020. PlayStation 4, by comparison, took 160 weeks.
This year, Sony also outsold the Xbox Series X and S by almost three times, reports the Financial Times, based on data from Ampere Analysis. While Microsoft doesn’t release official Xbox sales figures (you can guess why), Ampere estimates that Microsoft sold 7.6 million next-gen systems this year (a 15 percent drop from 2022), while sales Sony grew 65 percent to 22.5 million units.
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan thanked players for choosing PlayStation 5:
“The success of PlayStation 5 is a testament to the continued support of our brand from players around the world and their interest in the incredible games created by the talented developers at PlayStation Studios and partner studios. We are grateful to all our players and are thrilled to be able to fully satisfy the high demand for the first time this holiday season.”
