iOS 18.1 Beta Gets AI function For Removing Objects From Images

Apple developers continue to integrate AI-powered features into the beta versions of their major operating systems iOS, iPadOS, and the next generation of macOS. This time, iOS 18.1 beta 3 for developers has introduced a feature called Clean Up, which uses neural network capabilities to remove unwanted objects from images.

You can tap on a selected object to remove it, or you can draw or paint over the area you want. Clean Up works best when there is a clean, uncluttered background behind the object you want to remove, and the smaller the object, the better. Trying to remove an entire person from the foreground of an image (like in a group shot) will result in artifacts, as seen in the video.

Clean Up cannot be used on Live Photos. You also can’t use Clean Up on videos, but it works on all other types of images, including screenshots, old photos, and photos you took on another phone.

Apple has been testing an initial set of Apple Intelligence AI features since July, adding new tools to the iOS 18.1 beta that is available to developers. Currently, the AI features include the ability to generate and edit text and messages, advanced email tools, photo editing tools, and more.
