Google Stops Development of AR Glasses

The company closed the Google project, which for several years was engaged in the creation of Iris augmented reality glasses. In winter 2022, information appeared about the development by Google of its version of augmented reality glasses – Project Iris. Meta Quest Pro and, of course, Apple Vision Pro had not yet been announced, so the niche still seemed unoccupied. Project Iris was expected to be completed by 2024, but now, according to Business Insider, Google has stopped developing augmented reality glasses.

The development of Project Iris was first announced in January 2022. The gadget looked like ski goggles. According to Google employees, it was a device jointly developed with Samsung. The real Project Iris looked more like regular glasses.

Now Google is fully focused on developing a software platform for augmented reality, and not on the hardware.
