Google Introduces New Security Rules For Accessing Gmail

In October, Google is introducing new security measures for its Gmail email service, restricting access to accounts using outdated authentication methods. Users will no longer be able to sign in to their email using apps and devices that do not support modern data protection protocols.

The new security system involves switching to the OAuth authorization protocol, which provides more reliable data protection. Now access to Gmail via the CalDAV, CardDAV, IMAP, POP and Google Sync network protocols using only a username and password will not be possible.

It is important to note that the changes will only affect users of the Google Workspace service. Owners of personal Gmail accounts do not have to worry about access to their mail, but they should be aware that IMAP access using a mail client will now be carried out exclusively through the OAuth (Open Authorization) protocol, which allows a third-party application to gain limited access to user data on another service without transmitting a login and password. Google recommends taking a number of steps to avoid problems with access to Gmail after the new rules come into effect. In particular, users of the Outlook 2016 mail client and earlier versions need to switch to Microsoft 365 or current versions of Outlook for Windows and Mac.

These measures are designed to enhance privacy protection and reduce the risk of cyber attacks, making Gmail a safer place to use.
