Opal Launches New Tadpole Camera In 4K Quality

Opal, a company founded by former Apple and Beats designers and backed by investors like MKBHD, today unveiled its latest webcam. The new $175 Opal Tadpole combines “ultra-portability” with 4K webcam hardware designed for on-the-go use.

The Opal Tadpole features a 48-megapixel Sony IMX582 sensor and a six-element f/1.8 lens. The manufacturer positions the new product as “the world’s smallest webcam ever created.” The Opal Tadpole measures 1.2 x 1.2 inches (30.5 x 30.5 mm) and weighs 45 g.

The camera is designed specifically for use with laptops, which rarely boast even acceptable webcam quality. With a built-in clip that fits “any laptop display,” no additional hardware is required to mount the camera. The included USB-C braided cable can also act as a strap when transporting the camera.

The Opal Tadpole is available to order today from the company’s website for $175 and comes in black or white. Unlike the Opal C1, it works with both Mac and PC.
