Facebook Plans Major Updates

Mark Zuckerberg and Meta execs have been competing with TikTok for a long time. They plan to redesign the Facebook app completely.

The company is working on sideways updates to the main Facebook feed that will focus on featured content from pages, creators and people you don’t follow yet, according to a note from a Facebook executive.

Tom Alison, who leads the Facebook app at Meta, says the goal is to turn Facebook into a “Discovery Engine” that will rely heavily on recommendations similar to the “For You” TikTok feed. Recommendations will mostly come from “unrelated” content, including videos, and users will see fewer messages from friends and family in their feeds. It will also bring the Messenger inbox back into the Facebook app to encourage users to share more content from the mentioned “Discovery Engine”.

It’s unknown how long it will take Meta to implement these changes, but this isn’t the first time Meta’s executives have hinted at big changes coming to the Facebook app, and we’re hearing about the upcoming transition from a social network to a “Discovery Engine.”

In the spring, Zuckerberg said the company was in the midst of a “major shift” that would change channel dynamics to focus on AI-driven recommendations rather than user social graphs.
