Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television have decided to cast a new actor to play Kratos in the God of War series. Ryan Hurst, who was previously cast as the lead, suffered a serious injury during filming.

The project’s management had hoped for Hirst to return to action by mid-August, but the recovery period for such an injury typically extends to four to six months. Continuing filming until 2027 would likely have been abandoned.

After some deliberation, Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television decided to replace Hearst with another actor. Filming is scheduled to resume in mid-October.

According to Deadline, Hearst’s recovery is the priority, but the expected recovery period has proven longer than the filming schedule can accommodate. Four full episodes had been filmed before the incident.

The God of War series follows Kratos and his son, Atreus (Callum Vinson), as he embarks on a journey to scatter her ashes from the top of the highest mountain after the death of his wife.

Filming for the God of War adaptation began in February. Prime Video immediately ordered two seasons, which are planned to be filmed back-to-back. The project is being helmed by writer and producer Ronald D. Moore, who worked on Battlestar Galactica and For All Mankind.
