Discord reported a data breach among some of its users. This occurred due to a hack at one of its technical support partners. Hackers gained access to personal information and attempted to blackmail the company, demanding ransom.
Discord’s announcement stated that one of its third-party support providers was compromised by an “unauthorized party.” The attackers gained access to information from a limited number of users who contacted Discord through its “Help Desk” and/or Trust & Safety teams. The announcement also stated that the attackers attempted to extort ransom from Discord. It specifically noted that “the attackers did not gain access to Discord’s systems.”
The data accessed by the attackers included users’ full names, email addresses, and the last four digits of their bank card numbers. The “unauthorized party” also gained access to a “small number” of ID images that users provided when verifying their age on Discord. According to the company, the attackers did not obtain full bank card numbers or passwords.
Discord has already begun informing affected users via email, The Verge reports. Those whose credentials may have been compromised will receive a separate notification.
The company has revoked access to its systems from the compromised partner, reported the incident to regulators, and is conducting an internal security review.
