‘Minecraft Movie’ Smashes Box Office Despite Low Critical Ratings
The Minecraft movie has become a surprise hit. In the first three days in the US, it has collected more than $135 million and is confidently on track to have the best start of 2025. According to estimates, the weekend total could reach $145-155 million. If the figures are confirmed, the film will overtake The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.3 million) and set a record for game adaptations.
Until now, the record for the highest opening gross in the US for a video game adaptation was held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie with $146 million, while internationally, The Super Mario Bros. movie grossed $377 million in five days (Minecraft had three).

According to the plot, four losers are sucked into a cubic world through a mysterious portal. To return home, the heroes will have to show courage and ingenuity, as well as team up with local expert Steve.

With a budget of $150 million, the film was a major win for Warner Bros. After a series of flops, the studio was in need of a successful release. Rumors even claimed that WB was ready to be sold if it didn’t turn things around by the summer — when James Gunn’s Superman was released.
