The Rise And Fall Of BlackBerry Are Filmed

A full-length film was shot about the legend of business phones – the BlackBerry brand. The upcoming film, simply titled BlackBerry, is being directed by Avalanche director Matt Johnson, and the tape has recently wrapped production.

The cast is led by Jay Baruchel (“This Is the End”, “Knocked Up”) and Glenn Howerton (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”).  While not officially confirmed, they likely played founders and CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie.

The script is based on the book Losing the Signal: Behind the Extraordinary Rise and the Spectacular Fall of Blackberry by journalists Jacqui McNish and Sean Silkoff, which in turn is based on a 2013 article in The Globe and Mail. Since the book was released in 2015, the film will not follow the failed attempts to revive the brand in subsequent years.

XYZ Films, which co-financed the project, will release the film in TIFF format. In Canada Elevation Pictures will distribute the film.
