Scientists Created Cyborg Locusts That Can Smell Cancer
An unusual method for cancer screening was proposed by scientists from the University of Michigan. They implanted electrodes into the locust’s brain that pick up signals from odor receptors. It turned out that insects are able to distinguish the smell of cancer cells.
During the experiment, the scientists grew three types of cancer cells. Healthy cells also took part in the experiment. The locust brain reacted differently to the smells of these cells. Thus, with the help of insects, it was possible to identify tumor formations.
The University of Michigan wants to make portable kits out of locusts, electrodes and an interpreter. Then all this could be used for individual screening. However, while it seems very doubtful that such methods can be approved.
