Nyobolt Created A Battery For E-Vehicles That Charges Up To 80% In Just 5 Minutes

Cambridge-based Nyobolt has developed a compact and powerful battery that can be charged in a very short time. During the first demonstration, the innovative battery was successfully charged from 10 to 80% in less than five minutes.

For comparison, Tesla’s existing supercharger can charge a car battery to 80% in 15-20 minutes.

Experts say eliminating so-called range anxiety is key to increasing the popularity of electric vehicles, but also stress the importance of improving charging infrastructure.

Developing technologies that allow people to charge their cars faster, comparable to the time it currently takes to refuel a car, is really important,” said Paul Shearing, professor of sustainable energy at the University of Oxford.

However, he added that more chargers of all types are needed.

An important advantage of the new battery is its durability. According to Motor 1, the Nyobolt has completed more than 4,000 fast charge cycles, which equates to approximately 600,000 miles of real-world use. At the same time, the battery retains the ability to charge up to 80% even after such a significant number of cycles.

The company plans to begin production of batteries on a small scale this year with an initial volume of 1,000 units.
