New York Wants To Limit The Use Of SUVs And Any Speeding

A bill introduced by the New York State Senate mandating the use of speed and safety assistance technologies, as well as strict visibility rules for large SUVs, has become known to help reduce injuries and deaths among pedestrians.

«A bill by Manhattan state senator Brad Hoylman would require all passenger cars sold from 2024 to be equipped with Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) equipment, which the European Union recently made mandatory for cars, by the way»

The ISA system, which uses navigation and sign recognition to determine permitted speed limits, can be disabled by the driver. However, a vehicle equipped with such equipment may use other methods to prevent overspeeding, including audible warnings, vibration, or active depressing of the accelerator pedal.

Hoylman also wants safety features such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) and Lane Keeping Assist (LKAS), which are currently available or standard on some vehicles, to become mandatory on every vehicle.

However, critics of the bill question whether New York State has the right to require vehicles to be fitted with equipment such as ISA. Unlike emission standards, which again can be set at the state level, safety is regulated at the federal level.
