Musk Opens Grok 3 for Free
Elon Musk-founded xAI has announced that its new language model Grok 3 is now available for free to all users. Until now, the AI was only available to X Premium subscribers for $8 per month.
Grok 3’s capabilities are compared to the latest OpenAI models, as well as DeepSeek-R1 and Gemini 2.0. Former Tesla executive and OpenAI co-founder Andrey Karpaty believes that the new xAI model works even better than its competitors.
Grok 3 also received two new features: DeepSearch and Think. The former is a “powerful agent that can quickly synthesize key information, reason about conflicting facts and opinions, and extract clarity from complexity.” The latter was implemented using reinforcement learning at an “unprecedented scale”: the AI “learned to improve its problem-solving strategies, correct errors through backtracking, simplify steps, and apply knowledge gained during pre-training. Like a human, when solving a complex problem, it can spend anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes reasoning, often considering multiple approaches, testing its own solution, and evaluating how to meet the task’s requirements exactly,” xAI said.
Despite this, X Premium+ and SuperGrok users will have expanded access to Grok 3. They will also be the first to use additional features such as voice mode.
