Meta is preparing a leap into some smart glasses with built-in screens, known internally as Hypernova, with a clear goal: to bring basic mobile phone information to your face without the hassle and at an eye-catching price point of around $800.

Meta smart glasses with a display are codenamed Hypernova within the company — their right lens will feature a small display, CNBC reports, citing anonymous sources. The device will be sold in partnership with EssilorLuxottica (owner of the Ray-Ban brand) for about $800. With the release of Hypernova, Meta, will finally be able to offer consumers glasses with a display, but the company does not have high hopes for sales — more components are used in the production of the device, and compared to the usual Ray-Ban Meta, the new model is heavier and thicker. Although Hypernova will receive a color display, its capabilities will be limited — covering a field of view of only about 20°. A small fixed window will be used primarily to display, for example, incoming text messages.

Some details about the Meta Hypernova smart glasses have emerged from a letter sent to Meta’s lawyer by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection. “This model will allow the user to take and send photos and videos, make phone and video calls, receive and send messages, listen to audio recordings, and interact with the AI assistant in a variety of ways, including voice, visual, and manual interaction,” the letter, dated July 23, says.

One of the headlines is the price: a price of around $800, especially below the initial estimates of $1,400 that were circulating a few months ago. It’s a strategy similar to Quest’s, with Meta lowering the barrier to entry to speed up adoption.
