Mercedes-Benz has entered into an agreement with Chinese self-driving car software developer Momenta. They plan to implement the autonomous driving system in the next-generation S-Class.
This is the German auto giant’s first foray into the robotaxi market. Preparing for cooperation in this area is closely linked to Mercedes-Benz’s plans to develop its own model line, as specially equipped next-generation S-Class sedans, which will debut in January next year, will serve as driverless prototypes.
Lumo Mobility is a division of K2 Group, which has local government approval to operate driverless taxis in the UAE. The decision was made to begin with the capital, Abu Dhabi. The German auto industry is becoming increasingly dependent on China, not only in terms of sales but also in terms of technology transfer. Volkswagen has already reached a level of business integration with its Chinese partners where they are developing Group models not only for the local market but also for international markets.
