Humanoid Robot Boston Dynamics Atlas Learns To Shift Shock Absorbers
Boston Dynamics has unveiled a new video showing the famous Atlas robot unpacking and installing car shock absorbers. This video came as a real surprise.
The fact is that Atlas has always served as a cutting-edge platform for robotics research. It performed a variety of tricks, but its developers never prepared it for commercial use.
Automotive production is well suited for robotization: it is characterized by large volumes of work, manipulation of heavy parts, high risk of injury and high demands on the accuracy and reliability of operations. Modern assembly lines already employ many industrial robots that specialize in specific tasks. But there are tasks that are difficult to describe with strict algorithms, and humanoid robots are suitable here.
A new video from Boston Dynamics certainly stirs up interest in this topic. However, it is important to remember that Atlas is not intended for mass production as a commercial product. This is a unique testing platform that has been a leader in its field for over a decade. If Boston Dynamics really plans to get serious about the commercial use of humanoid robots, they will most likely need an entirely new, less “athletic” design.
