The respected publication Bloomberg has published a new column dedicated to the global memory crisis. The journalists analyzed the current market situation and discovered that some major companies are already changing their long-term plans.

According to sources, Sony is considering delaying the release of the PlayStation 6 console. The company has even suggested that the next-generation console could launch in 2028 or even 2029, breaking the usual seven-year cycle that has been in place since the PS3’s release in 2006.

The delay in the new console’s release is attributed to rising component costs, particularly DRAM and NAND chips. High demand for new AI data centers has created a shortage in the memory chip market, making them incredibly expensive. This has already had a catastrophic impact on the consumer PC market and will have repercussions for most consumer electronics segments.

“Sony Group Corp. is considering delaying the debut of its PlayStation console to 2028 or even 2029, according to sources familiar with the company’s plans. This would be a serious setback to its carefully crafted strategy to maintain user interest between hardware generations,” Bloomberg reports.

The industry currently expects the memory crisis to last until at least the end of 2026. However, some manufacturers note that it could extend until 2028.
