New Oscar Rules Allow AI in Movies
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially mentioned artificial intelligence in its Oscar eligibility rules for the first time. Under the new changes, the use of AI will not automatically affect a film’s chances of winning an award,
The document states that the use of AI and other digital tools “will not help or harm the chances of being nominated.” Therefore, films made with the help of such technologies can, in principle, claim the coveted statuette.
Generative artificial intelligence, which creates text, images, audio and video based on text queries, has already been used in the production of some films that were awarded Oscars in March.
However, the Academy promises that when choosing winners, it will still study the contribution of people to a particular work.
Experts say the changes reflect Oscar’s attempt to adapt to a rapidly changing film industry where technology plays an increasingly important role, while at the same time making it clear that humans must remain the primary creator.
