China Launches World’s First 10Gbps Home Internet
In April 2025, Huawei and China Unicom announced the launch of the world’s first commercial 10-gigabit-per-second broadband network for home users. The new technology, deployed in the Xiong’an district of Hebei Province, allows users to download a two-hour 8K movie, which is about 90 gigabytes in size, in just over a minute.
During testing, download speeds on the end user device reached 9,834 Mbps, while upload speeds were 1,008 Mbps. This speed would allow you to download a two-hour 8K movie in just 72 seconds. At the same time, network latency was consistently 3 ms. These figures significantly exceed the current broadband standard for the consumer market.
This achievement not only demonstrates the maturity of 50G PON technology, but also lays the foundation for future high-bandwidth applications, including 8K video streaming, cloud storage with data download speeds up to 10 Gbps, AR/VR, and more.
The Xiong’an area, where the new network was launched, is a special economic zone located about 100 kilometers southwest of Beijing. The area is being actively developed as an innovation hub and testing ground for cutting-edge technologies.
