The world’s largest single-unit floating offshore wind turbine, with a capacity of 16 MW, has been assembled at Beihai Port in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. This project, implemented as part of China’s strategy to develop a marine economy and transition to clean energy, once again underscores China’s technological independence in harnessing wind energy.

The rotor diameter is 252 meters, with a swept area equivalent to approximately seven football fields.

All key components of the installation, including mooring lines, gearboxes, and the ballast management system, are manufactured in China. Once connected to the grid, the installation is expected to generate approximately 44.7 million kWh of electricity annually. This amount is sufficient to meet the needs of several thousand households.

A distinctive feature of the new platform is China’s first dynamic ballast system. By pumping water into and out of reservoirs, the platform can automatically adapt to changing wind and wave conditions, reducing the risk of capsizing and increasing the efficiency of power generation.

The project is being managed by the state-owned China Three Gorges Corporation, known for building the world’s largest hydroelectric power station, the Three Gorges Dam.

According to Global Energy Monitor, the country added 4.4 GW of offshore wind capacity in the first six months of 2025, exceeding last year’s total for the entire year. Such initiatives support China’s ambitious goals, including achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.
