Volvo Unveils Smart Seat Belt
Volvo is once again changing the standards of car safety with a new intelligent seat belt that can adapt to each passenger’s body and even supports over-the-air updates.
Using a set of advanced sensors that take into account a person’s weight, height, mass and posture, Volvo offers to differentiate the application of seat belt tension to better protect the people in the car. For example, a larger and taller person needs more seat belt tension during a collision to reduce the risk of head injury. A person of a smaller build or a child, on the contrary, needs less belt tension during a collision to reduce the risk of chest injury.

Developed in collaboration with German company ZF, the new multi-adaptive seat belt features AI that determines the optimal settings in real time depending on the road situation and accident conditions.
The first Volvo model to feature the new generation of seat belts as standard will be the EX60 electric crossover, which is due to hit the market next year.
