Trump Delays TikTok Ban in US for Third Time
US President Donald Trump has extended for the third time the deadline for Chinese company ByteDance to sell its TikTok platform in order to continue operating in the US market.
The decision was made despite an existing law that would have forced TikTok to cease operations if there was no progress in the sale talks. Trump has already delayed the law twice, initially set for January of this year. After taking office for a second term, he did not immediately impose sanctions on the service, first pushing the date back to early April and then to June 19. The president explained his decision by saying that TikTok had played an important role in attracting young voters during the 2024 presidential campaign, and expressed confidence that Chinese leader Xi Jinping would approve a deal that would allow the app to remain in the United States.
Some members of the Democratic caucus in Congress argue that the sitting president lacks the authority to push back the date again and express doubt that the proposed structure of the deal complies with legal requirements.
