The Earth Began To Rotate Faster And No One Knows Why 

Scientists recently recorded the shortest day on Earth since atomic clocks began tracking the length of the day. According to available data, on June 29, 2022, the Earth rotated around its axis 1.59 milliseconds faster than 24 hours.

Days have become much longer since the formation of the Earth. Around 1.4 billion years ago, the Earth’s rotation took less than 19 hours. The days were getting longer by an average of about one 74,000th of a second every year. But the planet’s rotation can fluctuate from day to day.

Scientists believe there are a number of factors that could affect the Earth’s rotation, including earthquakes, stronger winds, melting and renewal of ice caps, the moon, and climate. Some have suggested that the so-called “Chandler wobble” may also be affecting the rotation. This phenomenon is a “small, non-uniform deviation of the points of rotation of the Earth relative to the solid Earth.”  puts it down.

If the upward trend in the Earth’s rotation continues, scientists will have to subtract a second from the readings of atomic clocks, which has never been done before.
