OverDrive Is Shutting Down On May 1st
OverDrive will be shut down forever. After announcing its plans to shut down the app and remove it from app stores last year, the company now says OverDrive will be shutting down completely on May 1, 2023. Instead, readers will be encouraged to use the newer Libby digital app.
The closure is part of OverDrive’s efforts to move the bulk of its customers to the new Libby app. In August 2021, OverDrive detailed for the first time its plans to transition users to its new Libby mobile app and began the process of working with partner institutions to direct their own user bases to transition. The two services have coexisted since Overdrive launched Libby in 2017, although there is no need to use the old app. Libby has a few things that OverDrive doesn’t, most notably support for multiple library cards, one bookshelf for all your credits and storage, and Apple CarPlay integration.
In addition, OverDrive removed the legacy app from the Apple App Store, Google Play, and Microsoft App Store to prevent new users from finding and installing it on their devices.
