ISS Spacewalk Was Interrupted Due To Spacesuit Problems
Cosmonaut Oleg Artemiev’s spacewalk was interrupted due to spacesuit problems
During yesterday’s spacewalk, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Artemiev was ordered to “drop everything” and make an emergency return to the International Space Station. This happened during a NASA live broadcast.
“Leave everything and return immediately,” was one of the last transmissions from Earth before Artemiev confirmed he was heading for the airlock. Minutes later, he was able to re-enter the space station and attach his powered suit.
Cosmonaut Denis Matveev, who had worked with Artemyev on the EVA, remained outside the space station’s airlock for over an hour until controllers decided to terminate the EVA ahead of schedule due to problems with Artemyev’s spacesuits.
A live Russian interpreter said that Artemyev joked with air traffic controllers that after returning to the International Space Station, he feels “better than at the start of his spacewalk.”
The goal of Wednesday’s spacewalk was for two cosmonauts, Artemiev and Matveev, to install two cameras on the new device. A European robotic arm that is attached to the outer surface of a space station on the Russian-controlled portion of the International Space Station.
