Elon Musk’s xAI has unveiled a new AI model for programming tasks called Grok Code Fast 1. The model, which the company describes as “fast and efficient,” is designed to cut down on the slow processing cycles that are common in other AI assistants.
Grok Code Fast 1 is built from scratch on a new architecture. During the training process, the team collaborated with representatives of the above platforms to improve the model’s agent functions, such as working in the terminal, searching, and editing files. The model is versatile across the entire software stack and works especially well with TypeScript, Python, Java, Rust, C++, and Go. The AI was specifically tailored to the tasks that programmers face every day. In SWE-Bench-Verified, Grok Code Fast 1 shows a result of 70.8% — higher than GPT o3 (69.1%), but lower than Claude Opus 4.1 (74.5%) and GPT-5 Thinking (74.9%). The new product also has a context window of 256K and a speed of about 190 tokens per second.
To attract early adopters, the model will be available for free for one week via partner platforms including GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Cline, Roo Code, Kilo Code, Opencode, and Windsurf. After the trial, the cost to use the xAI API will be $0.20 per million input tokens, $1.50 per million output tokens, and $0.02 per million cached input tokens. xAI has also published a guide to creating effective Grok Code Fast prompts.
