Flaming Meteorite Weighing Over a Ton Explodes Over US

On Thursday, June 26, 2025, a meteor about a meter in diameter and weighing more than a ton entered the Earth’s atmosphere at a speed of about 50,000 km/h. Residents of several US states, including Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee, reported seeing a “bright fireball” flying over their heads.

According to NASA, the meteorite originated about 47 miles (77 kilometers) above Oxford, Georgia, traveled southwest, and broke into fragments about 27 miles (43 kilometers) above West Forest, Georgia. The alien’s disintegration released the equivalent of twenty tons of TNT. The powerful release of energy activated the Geostationary Lightning Mappers (GLMs) aboard NOAA’s GOES satellites.

Astrophysicists describe such an exceptionally bright meteorite as a “bolide” that explodes upon entering the atmosphere.

Experts also clarified that the fall of this meteorite has no connection with the current June Bootids meteor shower, which continues during this period. The metallic composition of the meteorite, as evidenced by its bright turquoise color and orange tail during combustion, indicates its asteroid origin.
