Chinese company ByteDance, the developer of the video service TikTok, has unveiled an updated version of its Doubao 2.0 chatbot, the country’s most popular AI-powered app. Doubao 2.0 is positioned as a solution for the “era of AI agents,” when models will be able to independently perform complex tasks, not just answer questions.
The launch comes amid increasing competition in the AI market. Previously, Chinese companies were unprepared for the rapid rise in popularity of DeepSeek, whose models attracted global attention due to their high quality and relatively low development costs. The release of Doubao 2.0 ahead of the expected release of DeepSeek’s new model is seen as an attempt to strengthen ByteDance’s position.
The company also previously unveiled its video generative model, Seedance 2.0, which received widespread adoption on Chinese social media and positive reviews abroad. Doubao 2.0 is positioned as a solution for the era of AI agents, where models must perform complex tasks, not just answer questions.
According to the company, the professional version supports complex logical operations and multi-step tasks on par with leading global developments, while reducing the cost by an order of magnitude. ByteDance believes this is especially important for computationally intensive tasks.
ByteDance is one of several Chinese companies seeking to attract attention to their new AI models both domestically and internationally ahead of the Lunar New Year holiday, which begins next week.
