Apple Backs Right To Repair Bill In California
Apple and other electronics manufacturers, represented by major industry lobby groups, have spent millions fighting right-to-repair legislation that would require them to provide repair manuals, parts and tools to the general public.
Apple has now announced its support for California’s SB 244 bill, which would allow consumers and independent repair shops to repair electronic devices.
The company wrote to Senator Susan Eggman to announce its support for the legislation, known as SB 244. The bill would introduce a statewide “Right to Repair Act” that aims to “provide a fair marketplace for the repair of electronic and consumer products and prohibit intentional restrictions on repairs.” third parties.”
Essentially, this will give anyone who owns the device the legal right to have it repaired or modified, with some exceptions such as game consoles. This means that manufacturers will be required to provide customers and independent repair shops with access to the appropriate tools and manuals to carry out repairs.
Support from Apple is a pretty significant change in direction. In 2017, the company paid for a lobbying firm to oppose New York’s Right to Repair Act, Vice reported.
