A 40-kg Fragment Of The SpaceX Crew Dragon Was Found In The USA
The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has confirmed that the spacecraft debris found in North Carolina in May belongs to SpaceX’s Crew Dragon.
A large fragment of the spacecraft’s skin was discovered on May 22, 2024, near a mountain path; later, small fragments of the spacecraft were found in their yards by local residents.
According to NASA’s commentary, the found fragment remained after the service (baggage) module of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft entered the atmosphere. This happened on March 12, 2024, when the astronauts were returning by ship to Earth from the ISS. Before entering the dense layers of the atmosphere, the “trunk” is shot off and then burns up in the atmosphere. Why this impressive fragment reached the ground remains a mystery. Neither NASA nor SpaceX are in a hurry to guess it. None of them made any attempts to take the piece of the ship – it still flaunts under glass on a stand in the tourist center.
These are not exceptional cases in NASA practice. Last month, a piece of suspected SpaceX rocket debris was discovered in a farmer’s field in Saskatchewan, Canada.
