Meta Will Add Paid Features To Facebook, Instagram And WhatsApp
Meta is creating a new division responsible for developing and implementing “possible paid features” on the Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp platforms, The Verge reports, citing an internal company document that its employees reviewed last week.
The creation of a profile department is the social media giant’s first serious attempt to introduce paid features across all three of its largest platforms, each of which boasts billions of users. The company was forced to take this step due to the fact that its advertising business was seriously affected after the Apple iOS privacy policy update – Meta, according to its own forecasts, will lose $10 billion this year alone. A department called New Monetization Experiences will be headed by a former head Meta Research Unit Pratiti Raychoudhury.
The new unit was curated by Meta Vice President of Monetization John Hegeman, who told The Verge that the company is still committed to its traditional advertising model and that money can’t be turned off. He kept silent about what the paid features would be, although he noted that in five years they could become a significant part of the company’s business.
