Lenovo Shows Off  A Concept Laptop With A Transparent MicroLED Display

At MWC 2024, Lenovo showed the concept of an unusual ThinkBook Transparent Display laptop. As the name suggests, the model is equipped with a completely transparent screen. In addition, the laptop does not have a traditional physical keyboard: instead, the lower half of the case is occupied by a touch panel, on which virtual keys can be displayed.

A transparent screen may be useful for photography and graphics professionals. An architect, placing such a laptop in front of the landscape of interest to him, will be able to create a sketch of the future building without taking his eyes off the screen. On the outside of the laptop lid there is a camera that recognizes objects located behind the laptop. This allows, according to Lenovo’s plan, to work with augmented reality technologies.

Technically, the frameless MicroLED display has a diagonal of 17.3 inches and is frameless, and the resolution it supports is limited to 720p. However, if Lenovo wanted to make a transparent OLED panel, the display resolution would have to be lowered to 480p. To turn the display surface opaque, it needs to be filled with a white background, while the maximum screen brightness reaches 1000 nits. The existing prototype does not allow the entire surface of the screen to be made opaque, but Lenovo expects to achieve this in the production version. Display transparency does not exceed 55 percent.

The laptop is equipped with a webcam with support for generative AI functions. As a demonstration, the lens was pointed at a flower, after which the device provided brief information about the plant.
