Judge Dismisses Republican Committee Lawsuit Against Google Over Labeling Their Emails As Spam

A federal judge ruled in Google’s favor in a lawsuit filed by the Republican National Committee (RNC) alleging that the company’s spam filters were illegally suppressing their messages.

The judge ruled that RNC’s claims “fail legally.”  What’s more, even if it weren’t, Google is still immune from liability thanks to section 230 of the Telecommunications Decency Act, which insulates Internet companies from liability for content created by their users.

US District Judge Daniel Calabretta noted that while Gmail’s spam filter may have a biased effect, Google’s actions lack moral support and are aimed at protecting users from harmful content.

Calabretta also said other major email providers were politically biased. The NRC was given the opportunity to amend one of the sources regarding the intentions of the member countries in a long-term soft relationship.

It’s important to note that last year Google created a dedicated channel for political mailings, which the RNC is rumored not to have used. The company announced in January its intention to shut down the channel, while also asking for RNC’s lawsuit to be dismissed. Earlier, the Federal Election Commission dismissed a Republican complaint about Google’s email filtering practices.

This case brings into focus not only technical filtering of content, but also deeper issues related to the political influence and responsibility of large technology companies. The court’s ruling left Republicans an opportunity to make amendments to prove Google’s bad faith. In the future, such cases may become a starting point for the revision or clarification of legislation in the field of digital communications.
